Excursión a Alejandría desde Giza

Greeks, Romans... the cultural legacy of Alexandria can be seen in every one of its monuments and archaeological sites. immerse yourself in the past with this excursion from Cairo.

Excursion to Alexandria

At 6:30 in the morning we'll leave from Cairo towards Alexandria, the most important Mediterranean city in Egypt.

We'll begin our tour of the Alexandria port, visiting the Qaitibay Citadel. This defensive complex was constructed in the 15th century by the Sultan Qaitibay, where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. The lighthouse was destroyed by several earthquakes, whose remains were then used to build the citadel.

Then we head to the south of the city, where we'll head to the Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs, where the relief artwork shows the fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture. We'll see its three different levels, to get to know its passages, tunnels and galleries along which the tombs of the necropolis are distributed. near these catacombs can be found Pompey's Pillar, just where the temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian God Serapis was once found.

We'll then enjoy lunch in the centre of Alexandria, with a menu including fish, and seafood rice. Then in the evening we'll see one of the most important modern buildings in the city: The New Alexandria Library. Built in homage to the library, built in the 3rd century BC and burnt down, perhaps during the Roman Civil War in 48 BC, which housed thousands of papyrus scrolls and was one of the world centres of scholarship and knowledge in the ancient world. Today the library, reinaugurated in 2002, is one of the most important cultural spaces in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Finally, late in the evening, we'll return to the hotels of Cairo.

Changes to the itinerary

The New Library of Alexandria will not be visited on Fridays and Saturdays as it is closed on these dates.

Pirámides de Giza, Menfis y Saqqara

Fall in love with Egypt on this excursion to the Giza pyramids, the Saqqara necropolis and Memphis, once the capital of the country. Our Egyptology expert will take you back almost 5,000 years to the land of the pharaohs...

Pyramids of Giza, Memphis and Saqqara Itinerary

We'll pick you up from your hotel first thing in the morning, hitting the road towards Giza, a city found 20 kilometres from Cairo.

Once there we'll have three hours to enjoy sights that will be permanently etched in your mind's eye - the Sphinx, and the three largest and most famous pyramids in the country, built for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.

At lunchtime, we stop to enjoy a typical menu which includes, among other dishes, delicious grilled chicken kebabs with vegetables, hummus, tahini, and Arabic bread. For dessert: sweet pastries and a refreshing fruit salad.

Then, with energy to face the afternoon, we'll make our way to the Saqqara necropolis, one of the most important links we have to the history of ancient Egypt where, amongst other things, you can see the pyramid of Djoser: the first of Egypt's great pyramids.

In Saqqara we'll also visit the tomb of vizier Mehu, which was recently opened to the public for the first time since its discovery in the 1940s. This high ranking official in the sixth dynasty was buried with honours away from the reach of tomb robbers, meaning the hieroglyphs which decorate it are still exceptionally well conserved.

Our final stop will be Memphis, the old capital of Egypt, a real open-air museum where you can see, among other monuments, the impressive 83 ton, 11-metre tall sculpture of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphynx.

The tour then ends back at your hotel.

See the inside of the pyramids

If you're brave enough, and aren't claustrophobic, you can enter the pyramids of Khafra and Menkaure (100 Egyptian pounds, about 6 USD) or the Great Pyramid (360 Egyptian pounds, about 21 USD - highly recommended!). Tickets are bought there and then in cash, in local currency.
